fc i' PAGE 19 Heinsohn Was Red's First Choice When Bill Russell decided in 1969 that after leading the Celtics to 11 National Baskeball Association championships in 13 seasons (the first ten as a player under Red Auerbach the last three as a player-coach) he no longer desired to play or coach in Boston Auerbach surprised the world by naming Heinsohn to the job Of all the men who had played for Auerbach during the glory years Heinsohn was indeed the least likely to succeed as professional coach or so it seemed to his critics The cast against Heinsohn was a varied and contradictory one But in essence if Heinsohn could not satisfy Auerbach as a player and he was twice All-NBA three times Boston's leading scorer and five times in the All-Star game how could he satisfy Auerbach as a coach?
