Monday, May 16, 1977 Section 3 THE HERALD gets crack at title Cub firemen douse Montreal twice MONTREAL Herman Franks went to his bullpen one last time in Sunday's second game of the Cubs doubleheader sweep over the Montreal Expos and, surprise, it a wake- up oall for the tireless (but tiring) Bruce Sutter. No, manager Franks found another relief to his mountainous Paul Reuschel, older brother to Rick Reuschel. the Cubs winningest pitcher in 1977. And Paul, bespectacled 6-foot-4, 210-pound farm lad. recorded a save for rookie Mike Krukow who went just five innings the 4-2 nightcap victory but got his third win anyway.

It was the first non-Sutter save on the staff. Sutetr, who was supposed to have the uay off, was called on in the ninth inning of game one to save a 4-3 decision for Ray Burris. THE TWIN VICTORY gave the homebound Cubs a satisfying four- games sweep of the series in Canada, plus six wins on the seven-game road trip and 12 of their last 14, home and road included It also pushed eight percentage points ahead of St. Louis in the National League Last, into second place two games behind Pittsburgh. Reuschel came on in the sixth after Krukow yielded a leadoff double to Del Unser With the score 3-2 in favor of the Cubs, Franks about to fool around.

Krukow, the 25-year-old experiment that worked, and wiggled out of two immense pickles already, and the Cub manager want to stretch the luck. So in came Reuschel, who immediately walked Gary Carter to put the go-ahead run cm base. But he got Wayne Garrett on a fly to center for the first out. Then he fanned dangerous pinch-hitter Mike Jorgensen and got Dave Cash on a grounder to Ivan DeJesus. With Loose-as-arGoose Sutter standing by in the bullpen, Reuschel proceeded to mow down Expos in the seventh, eighth and ninth, allowing a walk in the eighth while striking out the side and giving up a one-out single to Cash in the ninth.

But a DeJesus-to- Manny Trillo-to-Larry double play ended the game, sending Montreal to its sixth loss in a row. SUTTER HAD ended the first game with a double play, this one going to DeJesus to cm a John Mertins spun a five-hitlee and provided the offensive fireworks with a two-run homer as the Cardinals crushed Gordon Tech, 5-0, in the opener of the Elk Grove Regional Saturday. The victory avenged a loss to Gordon in the sectional finals of the state basketball tournament in March and earned a spot opposite highly-regarded Maine West in the regional championships today at 4 p.m. The Warriors won, 4-3. Meanwhile two other area regional entries fell by the wayside Saturday, Prospect dropping a 1-0 heartbreaker to Maine East ground ball off the bat of Jorgensen.

Cass had led off the inning with a check-swing single just inside the right field line when he was fooled by a Sutter fork ball. Franks had gotten innings of effective, if not overpowering, work from starter Burris, who surrendered llhits but got credit for his fifth win against four losses. Then, lefty Willie Hernandez came on for a nifty one- third of an inning in relief, getting Tony Perez to ground out to end the eighth after Barry two-run homer off Burris cut the Cub lead to 4-3. But with two outs in the Cub eighth Franks resist pinch-hitting for Hernandez when George Mitter- and Fremd absorbing an 11-1 setback to St. Charles.

Two outs later, Doug Harth slammed an oppo- wald walked with two away.

After all, he still had Sutter in the bullpen. Bruoe saved three of the four games here, as it turned out. The Cubs had 10 hits in the first game and 11 in the second, but the biggest blows came off the bat of cen- terfielder Jerry Morales. The Puerto Rican slugger, finally getting used to the idea of hitting fifth, ripped a two- run double to the wall in the first inning of the opener, then smashed a bases-loaded single in the third frame of the nightcap. STEVE ONTIVEROS, who had three hits and continued his 10-game hitting streak, followed Morales an out later with an RBI single.

That was all of the scoring the Cubs would do for site-field double to left to score pinch- running Chuck Gilman and a scoreless duel. Mertins followed with a towering 340-foot drive that Tech leftfielder Kevin Kearns never gave up on and flipped over the top of the fence. was a high fastball that I probably should have laid Mertins said. The Cards added two more in the sixth on Frank 355-foot homer to right, a walk and two Gordon errors. Medina walked only one and struck out six.

Krukow, although they got an insurance run in the ninth for Reuschel on a double by DeJesus and a run-scoring single by pinch-hitter Gene Clines. Krukow, 3-2, was bailing out of jams almost the whole time he was in the game. Cash led off the first with a triple but he budge. Krukow then permitted a solo run in the second after the first two Expos reached on hits. Pinch-hitter Pete Mackanin led off the fifth with a double off Krukow and he eventually scored on the wild pitch.

The Cub righty got out of the mess with no further trouble, just in time fo the victory. The Cubs, eight over .500, host San Diego today. A TWO-RUN rally in the bottom of the seventh gave Maine West a 4-3 victory over East Leyden, keeping alive the Warriors hopes at the Elk Grove Regional baseball tournament Saturday. Bob single with two men on base proved to be the climactic blow, allowing both runners to score with the help of an error on a throw from the outfield. White Sox pinch-hitter Lamar Johnson stroked a two-out solo home run into the left field seats in the bottom of the eighth, but the Sox could not push the tying run around against Cleveland relievers Don Hood and Jim Kern. Kern threw the final inning to collect his third save of the season. Hood threw the sixth through eighth innings, yielding just two hits, one of them home run. Despite the reduced offense from the Sox, who lead the American League in hitting, it was an error by shortstop Alan Bannister in the second inning that was responsible for allowing Cleveland its three unearned runs.
