reported a net loss of $168 million in the third quarter due to a one time $550 million charge to pay for modernizing its phone net work After subtracting preferred stock dividends MCI said its loss for the quarter ended Sept 30 to taled $176 million or 69 cents per common share By comparison MCI the na No 2 long distance phone company earned $165 million or 62 cents a share in last third 'quarter MCI reported revenue of $2 billion in the quarter compared with $168 billion for the same pe riod last year The latest revenue figure re flects MCI's August acquisition of Telecom USA Inc the fourth largest long distance com pany for $125 billion MCI also announced in August it was considering a writedown of $500 million to $550 million to cover the retirement of its analog phone network which it is con verting to modern digital lines the writedown and other one time events MCI's prof its would have been up 14 percent over the year ago said Bert Roberts Jr presi dent and chief operating officer the challenge of smoothly integrating Telecom USA the company increased its share of the large account inter national and residential markets and rolled out a new service for small to midsize In August MCI moved up plans to have its phone network fully digital by the end of 1991 instead of the end of 1993 The accelerated schedule was made possible by the acquisition of Telecom USA which had exten sive digital lines and by an agree ment with Williams Cos Inc under which each company can use the phone network Digital phone lines use com puter language to transmit phone calls providing vastly clearer re ception than analog lines Briefs Transcript layoffs HOLYOKE The Transcript Telegram in Holyoke laid off five newsroom staffers earlier this week mirroring a trend in the troubled Northeast newspa per industry 1 Publisher Thomas Schu macher said yesterday that the afternoon daily laid off four re porters and a staff artist on Monday in response to the con tinuing in advertising and the downturn in the New England economy because of the chusetts that or Schumacher said One of the laid off Transcript Telegram reporters said yester day that the company will pay its that" filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this year said yesterday it will lay off 250 corporate em ployees and close offices in West Hartford and Syracuse NY The Rocky Hill based compa ny said it already has eliminated 200 corporate positions through attrition over the past four months The company has 1600 corporate employees The bulk of the layoffs 160 will be from Syracuse NY Ames said its West Hartford merchandising operations and Syracuse NY finance opera tion will be relocated in Rocky Hill next spring Philip Morris profit NEW YORK (AP) Philip Morris Cos yesterday reported third quarter net income jumped 253 percent as the cigarette foods and brewing units posted double digit gains in operating income or the quarter ended Sept 30 Philip Morris said net in come totaled $937 million or $101 a share up from $748 mil lion or 81 cents a share a year earlier Revenue advanced 156 per cent to $1282 billion from $1109 billion in the year ago pe riod Operating income from the
