Do you have withdrawal symptoms if you dont get to taste something sweet after lunch or dinner? I've seen some people eating spoonfuls of sugar, just like that, to satisfy the urge. Though I don't go to such dire situations, I crave for something sweet at times. This payasam happened on one such day.
Earlier I used to stock up something sweet all the time, but recently I've stopped that to form a healthy eating habit. These days, I snack dates or dried figs, when I feel like eating something sweet. But some days, I've this unstoppable itch to cheat. On such days, this is my go to recipe. It's a quick fix dessert. It's ready in less than 10 mins!
That reminds me… I should tell you something. Whenever I make the usual style of porridge with oats, it just tastes yucky! I know it's not an adjective you expect to see on a food blog. But that's the truth. Since there is so much of hype about “oats” these days, I wanted to include it somehow in our food. This payasam style suits me the best! I'm a big fan of anything with jaggery and coconut milk. From my experience, you cannever go wrong with that combo.
Usually I don't follow any particular measurements while making this, I just throw in whatever I feel like. But, since I wanted to share this with you, I noted down the measurements last time. Still, I'd suggest you to use this recipe as a guideline and you can work on it as you go, to suit your requirements. It's an ideal recipe if you are looking for some healthy and nutritious dishes for your kids. I think they will like the smooth texture and sweetness of the dish. All in all, I'd say this recipe is definitely value for your time and effort, not to forget the money part too ;)
Since it's a payasam recipe, I thought I'll post this as Vishu special. Also, it's my parents wedding anniversary on Vishu day. If there is one thing that they both agree unanimously, it's sweets, especially payasam ;) They both have sweet tooth big time, so this post is for them too. Appa and Amma, wish you a very happy anniversary!
Wish you a Happy Vishu!

Hi Maria, can I substitute steel cut oats instead of rolled oats?

Hi Anne,
I’ve used regular quick-cooking oats in this recipe. I guess you can try it with any variety of oats.
Cheers

My first preparation using Marias menu recipe that flopped :( planned this as dessert for diwali lunch with a few friends.. had to make semiya payasam in the end :(
My oats payasam had a very stringy consistency and smell of oats was overpowering.. I used Quaker oats and followed the recipe exactly.. not sure what I missed.
On a different note, I have tried numerous other recipes from your blog and they were all super hits! :)
Do post a lasagna recipe as well..
Thank you for your simple and easy recipes!Reply

Hi.. this looks yummy and easy to make (just what was ordered for me;) ).. thanks for the recipe.. but one question.. can coconut milk be substituted with any thing else? (to make a healthy version ;) )
Reply
Thanks Seena chechy :) You can use low fat milk instead of coconut milk for a healthier version. Also you can make it with thin coconut milk instead of the thick one.
Hope you get to try this and like it too :)

I want to see the six pack on Sony first!
Oats is my breakfast for the past three years. Oats mixed with dry fruits and cooked in boiled water is how I eat it (no milk is added). As per Mayo Clinic experts, oats is one of the top five food which will lower the cholesterol….. read this…. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cholesterol/CL00002
But of course not when cooked with thick coconut milk and ghee!Reply
Sony with a six pack, I’d also love to see that. But I dont think it will happen anytime :(
You can make it with thin coconut milk ;)
Hope you had a wonderful Vishu!

Easy and Simple…. thank you.
You are welcome :)
Hi Maria will the paysam get slimy after a while because of oats…i need to make it early and serve it later in the day….that too no option of serving hot…do you think it will stay?
Hi Norma,
It might get a bit slimy, but you can do one thing. Mae it ahead, but keep aside 1/4-1/2 cup of coconut milk. Just reheat the payasam before serving and add the reserved coconut milk. I think it should help..
Cheers
