Agritourism: a source for socio-economic transformation in developing economies
promise zvavahera
This conceptual paper uses an expansive literature review on agritourism as a source for socio-economic transformation in developing economies and extrapolates the findings to Zimbabwe. With exceptional natural resources coupled with deeply rooted cultural heritage and unique opportunities presented by agritourism prospects, offer Zimbabwe invaluable chances at fostering sustainable growth within farming communities. However, though there are substantial agritourism attractions within the country little effort is placed upon advertising these attractions resulting in insufficient literature on such versatile prospects. Research suggests that higher socio-economic status, improved access to food within households, and reduced vulnerability can lead to beneficial outcomes. Consequently, it is crucial for agricultural communities to be inclusive and considerate of their social circ*mstances, physical environments, and cultural heritage. To facilitate future progress, farmers should pro...

The Opportunities for Agro Tourism Development in Bangladesh
2023 •
Md Abdul Wahab
Agro-tourism is a form of sustainable tourism that combines agricultural activities with leisure and cultural experiences. In Bangladesh, agro-tourism has the potential to be a significant source of economic growth and rural development. Bangladesh's rich and diverse agricultural heritage, coupled with its beautiful natural landscapes, provides a unique opportunity for tourists to experience the country's traditional farming practices, food, and culture. The purpose of this report is to provide an overview of the opportunities for agro-tourism development in Bangladesh. The report begins by highlighting the benefits of agro-tourism for both the tourism industry and the rural economy. It then explores Bangladesh's agricultural sector, which contributes significantly to the country's GDP and provides employment for over 40% of the population. The report also examines the current state of agro-tourism in Bangladesh, identifying challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, lack of funding and financial aids, lack of training and skills development, and limited marketing and promotion. To overcome these challenges, the report recommends a range of strategies, including the development of agro-tourism clusters, the provision of training and capacity building for rural communities and tourism stakeholders, providing financial aids (loan facilities with lower interest rate), and the establishment of a national agro-tourism board to promote the sector and provide guidance and support to entrepreneurs.

Qualitative Assessment of Agritourism Development Support Schemes in Italy, the USA and South Africa
2022 •
Giovanna Sacchi
Agritourism has grown rapidly in many countries worldwide. However, for all this success, little is known about the concrete implementation, actual extent, and effectiveness of public and private agritourism support measures aimed at keeping up farming and promoting agritourism. Hence, the objective of this study is to provide an overview and a comparison of agritourism supports and policies in different countries. To this purpose, specific political, legal, financial, and promotional instruments for agritourism have been investigated. The focus is on three countries with strong agritourism sectors and different socio-cultural characteristics: Italy, the USA, and South Africa. The analysis of these case study areas is motivated by examination of agritourism from different continents with a diverging status of development as well as history. Italy and the USA are two countries with well-established and successful agritourism sectors; however, these are based on very different framework conditions, resulting in specific development paths and various supportive driving factors. South Africa has been included as a representative case study of a developing country where agritourism operations are growing rapidly through the support of an active private sector association. By assessing commonalities and differences in public and private support backgrounds in three different continents, the present study represents the first exploratory attempt to understand the influences of public and private national and regional framework conditions for agritourism development. Our findings suggest that both public and private supports contribute to success; however, clear criteria and further research are needed in order to fully understand the implications.

Features and Challenges of Agritourism: Evidence from Iran and Poland
Maryam Mahmoodi
In recent decades, agritourism has been suggested as one of the strategies for sustainable development of rural areas and diversification of the rural economy. The main purpose of this research was to review the situation, opportunities and challenges of agritourism in Iran and Poland to create an understanding of the agritourism situation in both countries. The systematic literature review (SLR) was used as the instrument in this study to access the number of possible papers and to understand the literature regarding the history, current states, support policies, developments and challenges of agritourism in Iran and Poland. Published research studies on entrepreneurship and agritourism in Iran and Poland between 2000 and 2022 were assessed. The results of this study showed that the development of agritourism in Poland has a longer history and is more developed compared to Iran and the Iranian authorities should take more measures in managing and developing agritourism. This study ...

Models Underlying the Success Development of Family Farms in Romania
2022 •
Eduard Dumitru
A family farm is an important part of the countryside, both economically and especially socially. In recent years, legislative measures have encouraged the development of large farms, ensuring food security while neglecting family farms, which are characterised by a lack of organisation, the absence of proper classification and the absence of measures to encourage their development and protection. In order to identify the premises underlying the development of family farms, and to create a development model for those family farms in a poor economic situation, the BMC method and SWOT analysis of seven family farms considered successful models were used. The development of these types of farms could provide a solution to a major problem facing the Romanian countryside: the depopulation of rural areas. The results of the study show that the development of these types of farms is based on joining an associative form (cooperatives) and/or making investments in the processing/storage line...

Circular economy and agritourism: a sustainable behavioral model for tourists and farmers in the post-COVID era
Pietro Columba
IntroductionIn recent years, issues related to environmental and ecosystem protection have been given greater consideration than in the past. The goal of adopting sustainable development models is vigorously pursued in the European Union and is reflected concretely in the new Common Agricultural Policy 2023-2027. The circular economy can certainly be an emerging economic response that can effectively replace growth models centered on a linear view. Agriculture and tourism are two crucial sectors where the “green transition” should be encouraged to help achieve sustainability goals through economic circularity. Agritourism's activity may be relevant in contributing to a behavioral change based on ethical choices. The study aim is to find out if agritourism can be the forerunner for the green transition. The objective is to know motivations and current level of awareness and adoption of concrete behaviors of the circular economy by agritourisms and their guests. The tourists' ...

Critical success factors for developing and managing agri-tourism: A South African approach
Peet van der Merwe
While the agri-tourism sector is constantly growing, academic research on the development and management of this sector is limited in South Africa. The agri-tourism sector includes over thirty different activities and attractions. These can be categorised as outdoor recreation, educational experiences, entertainment, hospitality services or on-farm direct sales. It can be challenging to identify a single method for sustainability and success. Although many farmers develop agri-tourism products/services on their farms to generate additional income, several fail because of a lack of planning and management. Part of this planning is to identify the critical success factors needed to successfully manage an agri-tourism business. Research on the critical success factors of agri-tourism has been conducted in several countries, including India, the USA, Europe and Taiwan; however, a South African approach has not yet been investigated. This study aims to identify critical success factors ...

Searching for Success Factors of Agritourism: The Case of Kleve County (Germany)
Dirk Reiser
Agritourism is increasing in popularity as more urban residents appreciate the slower paced rural environment and its authenticity. External influences (political crises and pandemics) have recently reduced mobility which makes agritourism an attractive alternative to former more distant holiday destinations. Agritourists are interested in working farms, local production and animal husbandry. Some European regions (e.g., Bavaria and South Tyrol) have successfully developed agritourism whereas the majority of rural regions are left behind. Agritourism diversifies farmers’ business model and increases their income. For our study, we chose Kleve County (Lower Rhine Area, Germany) as an exemplary region for a touristically unknown rural area. Regional opinion leaders, farmers and industry experts were interviewed to share their experiences about factors that could further and contribute to successful development of agritourism. The results of our case study and supplementary market inte...
